Why Is Blasting Used in Cutting Tool Manufacturing? The performance of cutting tools (mills, drills, insert tips) depends largely on edge preparation and surface quality. Blasting is used to clean micro-burrs left after machining, to controllably round the cutting edge (edge honing), and to achieve homogeneous surface roughening before coating. These steps help the coating (TiN, TiAlN, etc.) adhere better to the tool surface and improve cutting performance.

Shot Peening for Fatigue Life: On heavily loaded cutting tool bodies and related machine parts, controlled bead blasting (shot peening) induces compressive stress at the surface, delaying fatigue crack formation and extending part life.

Precision Edge Preparation with Micro Wet Blasting: Edge preparation is the process of creating a homogeneous radius on the primary and minor cutting edges of a cutting tool; when applied correctly, it can improve tool wear resistance and coating adhesion, achieving up to a 500% improvement in tool life.
