Titanium Blasting

Contamination-free, precision titanium surface treatment solutions critical for aerospace and medical implant applications.

Overview

Titanium is a lightweight, high-strength, corrosion-resistant metal. In nature it occurs in minerals such as rutile (TiO₂) and ilmenite (FeTiO₃); it is obtained by converting these minerals into titanium chloride and then reducing it with magnesium, and is alloyed with elements such as iron, aluminum, vanadium, and molybdenum. It is used in medical applications (prostheses, implants, dental implant/endodontic materials), aerospace (jet engines, missiles, and spacecraft), defense, chemical/petrochemical industrial plants and treatment facilities, automotive, jewelry, sporting goods, mobile phones, and many other fields.

Titanium blasting is performed for surface refinishing, preparation prior to coating/painting, and to create a specific surface texture. Particularly in titanium prostheses and implants, the controlled surface roughness achieved through blasting improves biocompatibility and contributes to faster, more durable fusion of the implant with the bone (osseointegration); the more appropriately the density of surface peaks and valleys is set, the better the resulting cell attachment and biomechanical performance. It has also been observed that the negative energy charge generated on the implant surface during blasting has a positive effect on the osseointegration process.

Recommended Abrasives for Titanium

  • Aluminum Oxide — strong, uniform surface roughening
  • Glass Beads — lighter, controlled texture
  • Stainless Steel Shot — satin, repeatable finish
  • Ceramic Beads — balanced abrasion
  • Plastic Abrasive — a low-aggressiveness option for delicate applications

The type and size of abrasive used for implant and prosthesis applications should be determined based on the targeted surface roughness and biocompatibility requirements. Contact Saykar to get a recommendation tailored to your application.
