Silicon Carbide Blasting Consumable
A high-hardness (9-10 Mohs), high specific-gravity abrasive mineral that delivers fast, effective surface cleaning, produced in two types: Black and Green.
- 9-10 Mohs hardness — one of the hardest abrasives on the market
- Two types: Green Silicon Carbide (for hard metal/ceramic/glass) and Black Silicon Carbide (economical, general-purpose)
- Angular grain structure — fast cleaning effect on every surface type
- Free of free silica, non-radioactive, contains no carcinogenic substances
Product Description
There are two types of silicon carbide on the market. Green Silicon Carbide is an especially hard and highly friable abrasive (~9.5 Mohs); it is mainly used on hard metals and ceramics, as well as glass and acid-resistant austenitic steels. Black Silicon Carbide is very hard but less friable than the green type (~9.5 Mohs); it is used on low tensile-strength metallic and non-metallic materials, as well as gray cast iron, ductile iron, chilled cast iron, brass, bronze, aluminum, organic minerals and ceramic materials.
With its high mechanical strength, high oxidation resistance and thermal shock resistance, it plays an important role in refractories used in firing kilns; it is also used in ballistic armor plates, wear-resistant nozzles, casting filters, casting ladles and ceramic kiln materials.
Silicon carbide delivers high energy transfer to the surface and produces a low level of dust. Its angular grain structure provides a fast cleaning effect on any type of blasted material. Since it can have a corrosive effect on both metallic and non-metallic surfaces, a coating such as paint should be applied after use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Black and Green silicon carbide?
Green silicon carbide is especially hard and highly friable; it is used on hard metal, ceramics, glass and acid-resistant steels. The Black type is less friable and is an economical, general-purpose option for materials such as gray cast iron, brass, bronze and aluminum.
How hard is silicon carbide?
With a hardness of 9-10 Mohs, it is one of the hardest abrasives on the market; its angular grain structure provides a fast cleaning effect on any surface type.
Is silicon carbide safe from a health standpoint?
It contains no free silica, is non-radioactive and contains no carcinogenic substances.
