Precision blasting for an aesthetic surface finish and scratch resistance on precious metals such as gold, silver and platinum.

Overview

Why Is Blasting Used in Jewelry? Rare metallic chemical elements with high economic value are called precious metals; the best known are gold and silver, and platinum (along with the platinum group: ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium and iridium) also belongs to this group. In jewelry, blasting is mostly carried out to achieve an aesthetic surface appearance, but it also increases the metal's service life and scratch resistance. No matter how hard they are, all metals scratch over time; on gold and silver these scratches also bring wear along with them, while on platinum wear occurs much more slowly. Blasting and polishing methods can be used to remove scratches from gold, silver and platinum surfaces.

Precision Craftsmanship with Pen Blasting: Blasting of precious metals is carried out with pen blasting machines capable of micro-level processing; these machines pressurize a suitable abrasive with dry air and direct it onto the surface with flawless precision through a small nozzle. Spherical abrasives (glass beads, stainless steel shot, ceramic beads) are preferred for brighter surfaces, while hard, sharp-edged abrasives (aluminum oxide) are chosen when surface roughness is desired; blasting soda and plastic abrasive can also be used depending on the application purpose.
